Post Community Partnership

Post Community Partnership

I got the opportunity to work at two different locations for my community partnership, Maine Adaptive Sports and The Pine Tree Society.  These opportunities carried a similarity in that they focused meeting outdoor needs and did not focus on the disability itself.  They identified capabilities and met the persons outdoor activity goals by utilizing care and tailored devices.  This was the most meaningful part for me as I was able to help people do some activities that I truly enjoy. …

Presenting Change

Presenting Change

Throughout this semester we had the pleasure of working on a group project.  Our focus was the effects of Pitocin on post-partum hemorrhage.  It was fascinating to read about the topic, especially as it aligned with material for our Maternity/Pediatrics course.  The process of doing the initial research and organization as if we were to write a paper, but then transitioning it to a poster and a presentation was great.  It showed an alternative form of education by taking a…

I hope you enjoy the presentation and feel free to leave comments or reach out to discuss.

Proposing Change: Dissemination Project

Proposing Change: Dissemination Project

Formulating the project proposal for our dissemination project has proved itself interesting with some challenges and provided more awareness.  We have become more aware about how oxytocin is used in clinical practice and its importance.  The challenges we have seen are mostly based around the complexities of gathering data, consolidating, and providing as teaching. The use of oxytocin regarding postpartum hemorrhage is a well-used and well-studied process.  By reviewing literature and learning more about its use I have become more…

Reflection – CECE Event: Promoting Resiliency and Relationships in Patient/Client Care

Reflection – CECE Event: Promoting Resiliency and Relationships in Patient/Client Care

Attending the Center to Advance Interprofessional Education and Practice (CAIEP) discussion was a great opportunity to hear from a variety of fellow University of New England (UNE) students from different programs and different years.  The collective input and discussion were focused on resilience and relationships surrounding patient care.  To define resilience in my own words: The ability to see through difficult situations and obtain a goal.  Resilience is crucial in the field of nursing as we are the support or…

Response to the Lewis Blackman Story

Response to the Lewis Blackman Story

https://www.qsen.org/post/the-lewis-blackman-story My initial reaction to watching the video was how much consideration Helen Haskell put into providing the world with this life event.  She was extremely detailed and conveyed details about how all of this happened.  I feel she had spent a lot of time coming to terms and working through her emotions.  The traumatic even inspired her to inform the world and to educate others so that this never happens again.  A truly powerful person to turn this tragedy…

Needle Exchange Program

Needle Exchange Program

We had the privilege of hearing Kerri Barton who is the program coordinator of Harm Reduction Services discuss how Portland, Me is working with the unhoused population to navigate drug use and how the needle exchange program operates.  Kerri stated that about 20,000 needles are supplied weekly and that there are about 2,000 unhoused living within Portland.  This provides a scale of how large the problem is, and the number of resources required.             I have personal experience with this…

Abuse in the MCH Setting

Maternal and child health involves a type of care that necessitates an awareness and knowledge of the signs of abuse as it is a prevalent situation in the United States.  As a nurse we are mandated reporters, and to further that it is our responsibility to gain knowledge in identifying the signs and acting in the appropriate way.  There are various forms of abuse such as neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse.  Each form has “red flags” that…

Telehealth and Telemedicine

Telehealth and Telemedicine

The world of telehealth greatly advanced with the covid-19 pandemic and prior had been advancing slowly since its beginnings.  Dating back to 1879 when an article in the Lancet when the telephone was identified as useful tool to reduce unnecessary office visits.  Moving forward to NASA exploring the need to monitor astronauts remotely during the Mercury Space Program in the late 1950s.  With the advancement of technology telehealth and telemedicine has made steady but slow progress over the years.  I…
