Nurses: If Florence Could See Us Now

Nurses: If Florence Could See Us Now

What skills did the nurses exemplify that you need to develop in yourself? Skills exemplified in the Nurses movie that I would like to develop in myself are abundant as I am just starting out and want to hone my skills.  I would like to focus on working with children and the ability to connect with them.  I can see that with so many patient populations as the ability to connect with a wide variety of people is a foundation…

Community Partnership: Maine Adaptive Sports

Community Partnership: Maine Adaptive Sports

For my community partnership I will be working with Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation.  They are an organization that provides outdoor opportunities with people with various disabilities.  I will be participating in their winter snowboard instructor program.  I look forward to this as I grew up skiing at Loon Mountain, Nh who has had a similar program to this.  I have always been intrigued by adaptive skiing/snowboarding and it’s great to have an opportunity to be part of it. I…

Presenting Change

Presenting Change

Throughout this semester we had the pleasure of working on a group project.  Our focus was the effects of Pitocin on post-partum hemorrhage.  It was fascinating to read about the topic, especially as it aligned with material for our Maternity/Pediatrics course.  The process of doing the initial research and organization as if we were to write a paper, but then transitioning it to a poster and a presentation was great.  It showed an alternative form of education by taking a…

Mass Casualty Incident Presentation

Mass Casualty Incident Presentation

The following is a presentation on Mass Casualty Incidents (MCI) and the mock disaster I participated in. I received training in triage and was lectured on how to navigate different scenarios of disaster medicine. I am happy to have been a part of this experience and receive this training as MCIs will be a part of life and my career moving forward. I hope you enjoy the presentation and feel free to leave comments or reach out to discuss.

Planning Change

Planning Change

This semester of Evidence Based Practice brings another research project.  Which I really do enjoy writing and researching.  The semester started with forming a group, and I have to say I genuinely appreciate everyone in my cohort.  This made selecting a group casual and easy.  The four of us are very productive and easy going at the same time.  We were able to quickly select a topic (Ptocin and its impact on postpartum hemorrhage.)  I feel like this sets a…

Telehealth and Telemedicine

Telehealth and Telemedicine

The world of telehealth greatly advanced with the covid-19 pandemic and prior had been advancing slowly since its beginnings.  Dating back to 1879 when an article in the Lancet when the telephone was identified as useful tool to reduce unnecessary office visits.  Moving forward to NASA exploring the need to monitor astronauts remotely during the Mercury Space Program in the late 1950s.  With the advancement of technology telehealth and telemedicine has made steady but slow progress over the years.  I…

Mental Health Simulation Reflection.

Mental Health Simulation Reflection.

I learned a lot from this experience as it presented several scenarios of clients with different psychological conditions in a controlled learning environment.  The actors did a wonderful job of displaying schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, suicidal ideations, and alcohol dependency.  Being in a learning environment and approaching as a group allowed for a constructive and open way to approach difficult patient provider situations. The group aspect was a challenge as in the patient provider scenarios it would most likely not be…

Medication Reconciliation Project

Medication Reconciliation Project

Reflecting on this project brings me to think about possible challenges and what is being done correctly.  I feel my client has a good grasp on living a healthy lifestyle, they have a healthy diet, exercise regularly, see their doctor regularly, and adhere to their medications.  My client is older than 65 so it puts them in a vulnerable population to health risks and to sensitivities to medications.  I see that as a potential safety concern and special attention needs…

Planning The Journey

Planning The Journey

As we work our way through this semester, and specifically writing a group paper on The Effects of Music Therapy on Burn Patients, it will require time management and a mindful approach.  The schedule to accomplish this assignment is well organized and has a series of stages.  From selecting resources to going through revisions, structure will help set the pace.  There will be different submission dates during the process, and we intend to stay “ahead of the game.”  By submitting…

How I made a difference in the life of a patient.

How I made a difference in the life of a patient.

During my first Clinical I have met a small number of patients as this is the beginning of my journey.  Here I would like to discuss a particular one that I had the pleasure of working with recently.  As I write I would like to express that specific details are going to be left out.  This is because part of the foundation of nursing is care, providing confidentiality and privacy is an important factor.  I feel an important way of…
