Mental Health Simulation Reflection.

Mental Health Simulation Reflection.

I learned a lot from this experience as it presented several scenarios of clients with different psychological conditions in a controlled learning environment.  The actors did a wonderful job of displaying schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, suicidal ideations, and alcohol dependency.  Being in a learning environment and approaching as a group allowed for a constructive and open way to approach difficult patient provider situations.

The group aspect was a challenge as in the patient provider scenarios it would most likely not be three people interviewing one patient.  It took mindfulness and observation of my classmate’s questions to sculpt a flow for the interactions with the patient. Ultimately, we did a great job given a strict timeline and the challenge of working on the fly as a group.

The mental health nursing process involves a combination of listening, observing, interpreting, and expressing.   This simulation offered an opportunity to utilize those skills.  By paying attention to our patient, we were able to assess their needs and create a fluid agenda to proving care.

I think this experience helped me prepare for more real scenarios.  As a nurse we will see many mental health issues in various practice.  It’s important to use therapeutic communication, avoid triggers, and maintain a positive environment for patients.
